The present invention discloses a process for the preparation of hydroxylammonium salts by nitrogen monoxide catalytic reduction with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst, the process comprising: (a) filtering in a first stage the reaction mixture obtained after reaction, thus obtaining a solution substantially comprising hydroxylammonium salt and a filtration residue substantially containing a mixture from, substantially, hydroxylammonium salt, and (b) subjecting in a second stage the filtration residue to settling for enrichment of the hydrogenation catalyst, thus obtaining a mixture having a higher amount of hydrogenation catalyst than that of the filtration residue, and a mixture having a lower amount of hydrogenation catalyst than that of the filtration residue.
