The steering column has a mounting with two cheeks between which the body of the steering column is mounted. The end of the column has a bearing (5) for the chassis and the other end of the column has locking adjusters for the steering column position in which the cheeks engage around the column and a released position to allow adjustment of the column with respect to the chassis. Shock absorbers (11) absorb energy by control of the displacement of the column with respect to the cheeks during an absorption movement defined by the absorbers and one of the regulating ends (R).
