844,073. Vehicle power steering. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. March 22, 1957 [March 29, 1956], No. 9478/57. Class 79(5). A power - assisted steering mechanism comprises a cylinder in which two communicating chambers 40, 41 are formed by a piston 28, a valve 27 controlling the pressure in the chamber 41, and a valve 21 controlling the pressure in the two chambers. Fluid from a pump 2 is supplied through a regulating valve 5 and a line 7 to the chamber 41 from which it passes through an opening "j" controlled by the valve 27 to the chamber 40. The latter is connected to the return side of the pump through a bearing 20, an opening 51 controlled by the valve 21, a passage 47, a space 43 and a line 12. Rotation of the steering column in one direction closes the valve 27 to produce an increase in pressure in the chamber 41 and displace the piston 28 to the right while rotation in the opposite direction closes the valve 21 and causes the piston to move to the left by virtue of the difference in area between its two faces. The piston is connected to the rack 30 of the steering gear and steering is effected manually until the steering resistance is sufficient to overcome the loading of springs 26 and 33 for the valves. A valve 11 permits the fluid to circulate within the casing 8 during manual actuation in the event of a pressure failure. Alternatively, the valve 5 may be arranged to connect the line 7 to a reservoir 4 when there is no output from the pump. A safety valve 10 is provided. |
