PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as a resin raw material, etc., in a high yield by oxidizing an alkyl substituent-having aromatic compound in the presence of a specific structure compound in a specified pH buffer aqueous solution. SOLUTION: (C) An aromatic compound having an alkyl substituent or a partially oxidized alkyl substituent is oxidized with molecular oxygen in the presence of (A) a compound containing a transition metal incorporated into the heteropolyacid skeleton having a defective structure site as a catalyst in (B) a buffer aqueous solution (preferably containing at least one of inorganic salts consisting of phosphates, carbonates and borates) having a pH capable of stably holding the heteropolyacid anion structure to obtain the aromatic carboxylic acid. The skeleton of the component A preferably has a skeleton of formula I-III (M is molybdenum, tungsten; Y is Si, P, Ge; (n) is a positive integer). |
