ELECTROCHEMICAL CELL INCLUDING COMPRESSED, UNBONDED, ELECTRODE GRANULES AND LIQUID ELECTROLYTE

An electrochemical cell includes a housing (2) divided by a porous separator (4) into at least two compartments (6, 8); a cathode electrode (10) in the form of unbonded granules filling one compartment; an anode electrode (12) in the form of unbonded granules filling the other compartment; and electrical terminals (16) passing through a wall in the housing (2) and in electrical contact with the electrode granules. The housing further includes an inlet port for inletting liquid electrolyte (14) into the housing (2), and an outlet port for outletting liquid electrolyte (14) from the housing (2). The liquid electrolyte (14) fills the compartments (6, 8) and the interstitial spaces between the electrode granules; and a compressive force is applied to the unbonded granules to enhance the electrical contact between their outer surfaces and with the terminal (16).
