A method for treating shredded scrap light constituents in a melt, in particular, for production of a metal comprises: (a) the material being blown into the melt, by a carrier gas forming a main jet (14), and additionally by oxygen forming a secondary jet (15); and (b) the main and secondary jets (14, 15) being surrounded at the point of entry into the melt by a jet (13) of protective gas consisting of hydrocarbon gas and/or an inert gas or a mixture. Also claimed is the apparatus.
