METHOD FOR PRODUCING AN AROMATIC POLYCARBONATE

A process for preparing aromatic polycarbonates which comprises subjecting at least one liquid starting material of polymerization selected from the group consisting of molten mixtures of aromatic dihydroxy compounds with diaryl carbonates and molten prepolymers prepared from aromatic dihydroxy compounds and diaryl carbonates to a transesterification reaction, characterized by conducting the transesterification under reaction conditions satisfying the following formula (1): log (S/V) 2 x 10-5 x Mn + 0.8 wherein S represents the area (m2) of an evaporation surface defined by the area (m2) of the exposed surface of the liquid starting material; V represents the volume (m3) of the liquid starting material; and Mn represents the number average molecular weight of the aromatic polycarbonate to be prepared.
