A novel cDNA (I) encoding human mucin 8 (MUC8), contains the sequence from nucleotides (nt) 3049 to 4238 of the 4826 nt sequence in plasmid pCos. Also new are: (1) a recombinant DNA containing (I); (2) MUC8 expressed from (I); (3) a DNA comprising the pCos, pB1.2 and pB1 sequences (4238 bp, 854 bp and 798 bp respectively); (4) synthetic MUC8 or its peptide fragments. All sequences are given in the specification.
