An automatic clutch, eg friction clutch, transmits torque which is regulated by control unit 13 that receives signals from sensors 15, 16,17,19 and 23. These signals are processed in the control unit 13 which activates an electric motor 12 so as to cause a master cylinder 11 to operate a slave cylinder 10, thereby engaging the clutch. The control unit 13 may be programmed with a characteristic curve or with fixed positions so that a predetermined position or condition of engagement may be provided. Preferably the physical existing engaging point is stored in the control units memory or the existing engaging point is compared with a momentarily stored value of the engagement point which is altered incrementally/decrementally on the basis of such a comparison. This comparison enables the system to adapt to inaccurate measurements resulting from the connection/disconnection of auxiliary devices, eg air conditioning systems etc, clutch wear, manufacturing tolerances and thermally induced influences.
|
