The proximity arc mechanism (20) is an electrical prong placed in close proximity to the input current section (15A) of the double contact circuit breaker. The circuit breaker is made up of two fixed contacts (13A,13B) making/breaking a bridge contact circuit (11a, 11B). A command mechanism (14) opens and closes the moving contact bridge (12). As the contact bridge opens, some of the arcing current is drawn off the proximity arc mechanism.
