PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the slab surface from being cracked by specifying the composition of the pre-melt flux, and specifying the flux to be amorphous. SOLUTION: The powdery pre-melt flux for continuous casting contains, by weight, 40-60% CaO, 30-40% SiO2 , 1-7% Al2 O3 , <1.5% MgO, 1-4% Na2 O, 1-5% Li2 O, 2-8% F, and is amorphous. The pre-melt flux in compliance with the condition suppresses generation ofβ-2CaO.SiO2 (Larnite) which is weathered before the use after the manufacture, and becomes amorphous when it is cooled, and suppresses the cooling of a space between a mold and a slab. The steel which is free from crack defects even in the medium carbon steel with large crack sensitivity and excellent in quality can be continuously cast.
