The present invention provides a process for controllably registering a plurality of reference marks of a continuously moving first layer (54) with a plurality of reference marks (74) on a continuously moving second layer (66). The distance between two successive reference marks is sensed, on one of the layers, generating a signal in response to the sensed distance. The distance between subsequent successive reference marks is adjusted to a selected distance, and the continuously moving first and second layers are joined together, thereby forming a composite layer (54,66). The position of each reference mark in the composite layer, relative to its associated reference marks, is sensed, and a signal is generated when one of the reference marks is out of position relative to its associated reference marks. The signal is processed in accordance with preprogrammed instructions to generate a speed command signal, and the speed of one of the continuously moving layers is adjusted in response to the speed command signal in accordance with the preprogrammed instructions. <IMAGE> |
