摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element of a transverse electric field control system which has the smaller dependency on visual field angles and with which the good display is assured within the wide visual field angles and after-images are hardly generated on a display screen after voltage release. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal alignment layer 3 is formed on one surface 1A of an electrode substrate 1 provided with electrodes 2 for forming display pixels. A polarizing mans 4 is formed on the other surface 1B of the electrode substrate 1. The liquid crystal oriented film 6 is formed on the one surface 5A of a counter substrate 5 arranged to face the electrode substrate 1. A polarizing means 7 is formed on the other surface 5b of the counter substrate 5. A liquid crystal layer 8 is held by the electrode substrate 1 and the counter substrate 5. The electrodes 2 are so constituted as to generate the electric fields nearly parallel with the one surface 1A of the electrode substrate 1 by the voltage impressed from outside. The element is so constituted that the pretilt angle of the liquid crystal molecules by the liquid crystal alignment layer 3 formed on the one surface 1A of the electrode substrate 1 attains <=1 deg..
