A silicone rubber-forming composition comprises, by weight, (1) 100 pts. of a methylvinylpolysiloxane convertible to the cured, solid, elastic state containing an average of from 2,0 to 2,005 total methyl and vinyl radicals, from 0,05 to 2% of the Si atoms being connected to at least one and not more than two vinyl radicals, (2) from 75 to 150 pts. of a finely divided mixture of silica fillers composed of (a) a precipitated silica having an average particle size of from 20 to 25 m m and a surface area of about 140 to about 160 square metres per gram, and (b) a diatomaceous earth having an average particle size of between 1,000 and 6,000 m m and having a surface area of about 15 to about 30 square metres per gram. (b) being present in amount of from 60 to 85% by weight of (a), and (3) from 0,5 to 2,0 pts. of bis-(2:4-dichlorobenzoyl) peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide may also be added. The siloxane is desirably freed of volatiles, as disclosed in Specification 773,325, prior to incorporation of the fillers and peroxide. Compositions of the above formulation are given in Examples 2 and 3 in which the siloxane used is obtained (Example 1) by heating a mixture of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane, a hydrolyzate of methylvinyldichlorosilane and KOH to 150 DEG -170 DEG C. for 1 hour to give a viscous polymer which was freed from KOH by washing with water on a doughmixer, with subsequent heating at 175 DEG C.-200 DEG C. to steam strip volatiles. Uses: for making gaskets and other moulded products. Specification 618,451 also is referred to. |
