The clutch mechanism consists of a cover (15) made from sheet metal which is fixed to a reaction or flywheel (11) on its periphery at fixing points. A second annular piece (16), e.g. a pressure plate, is placed between them. The pressure plate can move axially on relation to the cover, and is connected in rotation to it by elastic straps. An axial actuator (17) formed from a diaphragm (25) and which, takes support on the cover, is held permanently in the spacing in relation to it. The diaphragm takes up its support on the cover by the intermediary of a support cord (28) extending circumferentially. The support cord, in its free state, has a support face of an sinusoidal undulating form of alternating convex (21) and concave (24) sections. The convex portions (21) are to the right of the fixing points.
