Sound absorber for reduction of target mass of underwater objects, especially submarines

The absorber comprises an arrangement of hollow tiles (11) made of low sound reflecting material which are fitted on the outer face of the underwater object (10). The narrow sides (111) face each other in the arrangement. Each tile is filled with an electro or magneto-rheological fluid and is subject to a high voltage or magnetic field. The tiles lie directly next to each other by their narrow sides. The broader sides (112) of the tiles lying at right angles to the narrow sides are square or rectangular in shape.
