PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent shocks and rattling noises caused by the release of torsional torque accumulated as torsional deformations by controlling an automatic transmission. SOLUTION: This controller is designed to be capable of selecting a plurality of ranges including a parking range and to have a lock means for mechanically stopping the rotation of an output shaft if the parking range is selected. In this case, the controller includes frictional engagement devices B1, B4 which stop the rotation of the output shaft by engagement if the parking range is selected and a means 87 for slowly disengaging the frictional engagement devices B1, B4 if the parking range is shifted to another range.
