PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the need for polarizing plates and to make a screen bright. SOLUTION: Transparent electrodes 3 are formed on the upper substrate 1 of the color reflection type guest-host liquid crystal display device. Reflection electrodes 4 are formed on the lower substrate 2 and an electrooptic body 5 is held in the spacing between both substrates. Optical modulation is executed according to impressed voltages. The electrooptic body 5 has a laminated structure including a liquid crystal layer 6 of a guest host type which contains dichroic dyestuff 8 and is uniformly oriented along the transparent electrodes 3 and a phase difference plate layer 7 which has prescribed optical anisotropic axes and is formed along the reflection electrodes 4. The transparent electrodes 3 and the reflection electrodes 4 face each other to regulate plural pixels. Color filters 13 allocate the incident light rays of different wavelengths to respective pixels. The phase difference plate 7 is divided by every pixel and the thicknesses thereof are adjusted according to the corresponding wavelengths. When this liquid crystal display device is formed as an active matrix type, the color filters are disposed not on the counter substrate side but on the driving substrate side formed with switching elements and pixel electrodes, by which the pixel opening rate is improved. |
