Aircraft seat energy absorbing damper

The damper for absorbing energy by plastic deformation comprises first (2) and second (3) sections which slide one in the other. Braking (5) of their relative sliding is obtained by a cage (5A), mounted on the first piece, which carries balls (5B) in contact with the second piece walls to deform this piece during relative sliding of the two pieces. The braking cage immobilises the two pieces in an initial position following zero acceleration. It causes plastic deformation of the second piece following an acceleration greater than a threshold value and drives the pieces to a final position. The second piece has a varying transverse section which is a function of its distance from the braking cage in its initial position. Hence the resisting force to overcome increases as a function of the relative sliding of the two pieces from their initial to their final positions.
