The method involves gas exhaust return valves. The gas exhaust return valve (70) for each cylinder is located between the cylinder bore and outlet and/or between in- and out-let channels in the cylinder head. The valve (70) for a first cylinder (20) is opened during the suction stroke and at the beginning of the exhaust stroke of the second cylinder. The valve (70) is closed when the pressure in the exhaust channel (80) of the first cylinder is lower than the pressure in the combustion area of the second cylinder or lower than the charging pressure in the inlet and/or when a pre-determined amount of exhaust gas has been fed-in.
