PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new aromatic carboxylic acid ester having carboxyl group in the molecule, capable of reacting with a carboxyl reactive group in a high polymer compound or becoming a monomer of the high polymer compound. SOLUTION: This aromatic carboxylic acid ester is represented by formula I or formula II [ηis 0 or 1; (m) is O or 1; at least one of R<1> to R<4> is carboxyl and all of the remainders are groups, etc., of formula III (R<5> is H, oxyl, oxo, hydroxyl, an alkoxyl, an alkyl or an acyl); X is O, SO2 , CO, A (A is a lower alkylene chain), etc.] and includes e.g. a halfester of pyromellitic anhydride with 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinol. The compound of formula I or II is obtained by carrying out esterification of 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinol with an aromatic carboxylic acid anhydride.
