The invention relates to a process for essentially completely oxidizing concentrated effluents which contain oxidizable organic substances. The following steps are carried out in the process under a substantial positive pressure: fed-in, concentrated effluent 8 is brought into direct contact 7 with a hot gas 5 for the purpose of heating and evaporating the effluent in order to produce an oxidizable final concentrate 11 at a temperature near its boiling point and in order to cool the hot gas to a temperature which is at most 100 degree C above the boiling point of the final concentrate at the prevailing positive pressure, the final concentrate 11 is oxidized, at a temperature of at least 800 degree C, with a gas 13 which contains at least 60% by volume of oxygen, resulting in a suspension of hot gas 5 and molten slag 6, and the molten slag 6 is separated from the hot gas and dissolved in water 15. <IMAGE>
