The management system captures codes identifying an article conferring the right to a discount against a future purpose. The cash register at the point of sale prints the discount coupon with a coding that can be read by an automatic reader when the coupon is presented. The preferred coding printed on the coupon is a bar code, which is coded with information from the original purchase and a level of discount that is to be applied to the next purchase. Further information such as time and date of the original transaction will be stored to validate the coupon.
