The toothbrush has a simultaneous pendulum movement about its longitudinal axis (7) and a reciprocation along this axis, provided by a fork (8) within the toothbrush housing with a longitudinal slot (21) in one arm and a transverse slot (11) in the other arm. Each slot receives an eccentric of a respective cogwheel (14,13), both of which are mounted on a common axis (3), with each driven from an electric motor shaft (17) via an independent drive.
