A thermocouple intended for use up to very high temperatures, e.g. 4000‹ F., comprises an inner element 1 of iridium coated with an insulating sheath 3 of a metal oxide, e.g. flame sprayed beryllium or thorium oxide, and a coaxial outer element 4 of silicon carbide which may be sintered on to the coating 3. The outer element is provided with a coating 5 of a getter material, e.g. flame sprayed tantalum or rhenium, and an outer layer 6 of a metal oxide, e.g. beryllium or thorium oxide. |
