Determining protective potential for electrolysis plants

The potential required to prevent damaging surface reactions in an electrolysis plant, comprising at least one cell block containing one or several cells, when switched off is determined by a method in which a defined current pulse, limited in strength and duration to avoid electrolysis taking place, is passed through each cell. One or several voltage measurements are then made and, if they fall below a defined minimum voltage, the process is repeated, taking place simultaneously when the block comprises several cells. Synchronisation is preferably carried out with an electronic controller and the interval; between two voltage measurements is 2-20 seconds, preferably 5 to 15 seconds.
