A sample removing tool (10) comprises two part spherical blades (12,16) which are rotatably mounted on a carrier member (20) about parallel axes (24,26), the cutting edges (14,18) of the blades (12,16) facing each other and a portion of the cutting edges (14,18) arranged to lie on a nominal circle (C), the carrier member (20) being rotatably mounted on a support member (22) about an axis (54), the axis (54) being perpendicular to a plane containing the nominal circle (C) and passing through the centre (T) of the nominal circle (C), the axes (24,26) of the blades (12,16) being inclined to the axis (54) of rotation of the carrier member (22). The blades (12,16) are rotated about their axes (24,26) and the carrier member (20) is rotated about the axis (54) such that the cutting edges (14,18) of the blades (12,16) move along the circumference of the nominal circle (C) to cut a boat-shaped sample from a surface of a component arranged perpendicular to and intersecting the nominal circle (C).
