PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for estimating the response of a system to an input signal and a method for suppressing the echo based on the adaptive change of the gain. SOLUTION: This method is provided with an adaptive identifying device 16 with which the input signal is received on one side and an observation signal having one component as the response to the input signal is received on the other side, an error signal is decided by subtracting the input signal filtered by an identification filter 18 expressing the response of system 10 from the observation signal, and the coefficient of identification filter is made adaptive while considering the input signal and error signal. When an adaptive step sizeμL is considered, this is changed according toμL=a/(c+d.P2L/P1L). In this case, (a), (c) and (d) express positive constants, P1L shows the estimated power quantity of input signal, and P2l shows the estimated power quantity of the observation signal or the disturbance component in the observation signal. The parameterμl can be also used for applying the adaptive gain to the gain of echo canceler.
