Formaldehyde is polymerized in a liquid medium containing an acylating and/or an alkylating agent and a divalent tin compound. Specified acylating agents are acetic, propionic, butyric, stearic, benzoic, maleic and succinic anhydrides while specified alkylating agents are methyl, ethyl and n-propyl ortho-formates and tetraethyl and tetraethyl orthosilicates which may be mixed with formaldehyde-di-methyl or diethyl or di-n-propyl acetal or with ethylene glycol-formaldehyde acetal or ketal. Specified tin compounds are the salts of divalent tin with acetic, propionic, butyric, caproic, 2-ethyl caproic, palmitic, stearic, oleic, crotonic, adipic, sebacic, succinic, tetrapropenyl-succinic, benzoic, p-methyl and p-t-butyl benzoic, salicylic, alkylated salicylic, p-methoxy benzoic, phenylacetic, naphthoic, 2-hydroxy-naphthoic, di-n-butyl naphthoic, naphthalene-1,8-di-carboxylic, cyclohexane-carboxylic and hexahydrophthalic acids, tin diphenyl, divalent tin oxide and di-n-butyl-naphthalene-sulphonic acid. Inert media specified are benzene, toluene, ethyl and propyl benzenes, cyclohexane, deca- and tetrahydronaphthalenes, hexane, heptane, octane, methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, 1-2-dichloropropane, dichloroethylene, diethyl, diisopropyl- and di-n-butyl-ether, anisole, butyrolactone, ethyl-, propyl and butyl acetate, n-butyl propionate, ethyl butyrate and glycolmonomethylether acetate.
