PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a binder composition free from deterioration and defect of brick physical property, improved in characteristics of a refractory and capable of obtaining the refractory excellent in corrosion resistances to impact, spalling and wear by using a binder composition for refractory in which pitch particles are dispersed uniformly in phenol resin. SOLUTION: The composition satisfies the following characteristics: a maximum weight reducing rate is <=2wt.% when the composition is heated to 1,000 deg.C at a temp. rising rate of 10 deg.C/min under an inert atmosphere; the maximum weight reducing rate at 300-400 deg.C is >=0.4wt.%; restrictions in regard of crucible expansion index, etc., are provided in the composition; a softening point of pitch is >=90 deg.C but <=350 deg.C; its mesophase content is <=80% and its average grain size is <=100μm. The phenol resin is a novolak type phenol resin or a mixture of the novolak type phenol resin and a resol phenol resin. A ratio of the resol phenol resin is <=40%. |
