PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture an optical element forming die having plural discontinuous planes as forming surfaces in the form of an integral die and to work the same forming die again by a similar working method. SOLUTION: A forming die blank 1a is held inclining at a prescribed angleθ2 from a sine vice 10 inclining horizontally around an axis 16 orthogonal with the central axis 6a of rotation of a spindle 6 as the axis of rotation. The blank is so held as to rotate in such a manner that the central axis 11 of the forming surface intersects at one point with the central axis 6a of rotation of the spindle 6 rotated precisely by means of a spindle driving motor 4 and an angle detector (encoder) 5. A grinding wheel 7 has a diameter above the 1/2 + overlap quantity of the outside diameter of the forming surface 2 of the forming die 1. This grinding wheel 7 is held at a grinding wheel rotating spindle 8. This grinding wheel rotating spindle 8 is fixed to a grinding wheel rotating spindle holder 9 slidable and movable in a vertical direction.
