PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a double refraction control type element which displays a bright picture. SOLUTION: Picture element electrodes 16 and TFTs 14 are arranged like a matrix on a TFT substrate 11. A common electrode 17 and a black mask BM are formed on a counter substrate 12. The black mask BM is so formed that it is smaller than the non-display area part of this color liquid crystal display element. The TFT substrate 11 and the counter substrate 12 are aligned and stuck to each other. Since the black mask BM is narrower than the non- display area, the back mask BM doesn't overlap the display area and the numerical aperture is not reduced even if positional deviation is brought about. Next, liquid crystal 13 is injected. Further, a pair of polarizing plates 23 and 24 are so arranged that a desired color is developed in accordance with the change of the orientation state of liquid crystal 13. |
