The invention relates to a catalytic burner element comprising a reactor chamber with an inlet and an outlet for gaseous fuel and a heat-exchanging wall. A multiplicity of catalyst particles is joined to a three-dimensional support of a heat-conducting material composed of a metal and/or a metal compound for conducting heat from the catalyst particles to the heat-exchanging wall. The three-dimensional support of the heat-conducting material is composed, for example, of a foam-type cellular structure having open cells or a structure having similar properties. The burner element has very good heat-conducting properties so that a high heat flux can be obtained through a relatively small surface area. An embodiment according to the invention comprises a Stirling engine provided with such a burner element.
