Tissue is examined with a device (34) that includes one or more transducer elements (36), each of which generates a signal in response to force imposed on the transducer element (36) in accordance with varying properties of an underlying tissue structure (32) as the transducer element (36) is pressed against and moved over the tissue (32). The tissue examination device (36) further includes circuitry for detecting a variation in the signals as an indication of a composition of the underlying tissue structure (32).
