The gear change mechanism (1) has an epicycloid gear train with four shafts linked to two clutches (7,8) and three brakes (9,11,12). One of the brakes is a disc brake (9) and the other two are band brakes (11,12) to produce four forward gears and one reverse gear. The first band brake (11) completely surrounds the epicycloid gear train and immobilises, in the on position, a first drum (42) connected to a first member (43) of the gear train. The second band brake (12) surrounds the main gear bearing of the mechanism and immobilises, in the on position, a second drum (46) connected to a second member (47) of the gear train. The two clutches are situated immediately adjacent to the epicycloid gear train on the opposite side to the torque converter. The second clutch (8) surrounds the first one (7), and half the discs in each clutch are driven by a shell situated between them and connected to a turbine shaft (2). |
