PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst with an enhanced low temperature activity and a superb catalytic activity even under a changing total exhaust gas composition atmosphere of an automobile and a method for manufacturing this catalyst. SOLUTION: In a monolithic catalyst with a catalytic component carrier layer, the catalytic component contains at least, platinum and metal aluminate powder, which contains at least, one type of substance selected from a group of cobalt, nickel and zinc. In addition, an alumina composite oxide is obtained by adding an aqueous solution of at least, the selected one of aqueous ammonia, ammonium carbonate, ammonium hydrogen carbonate, ammonium sulfate and ammonium hydrogen sulfate to an aqueous solution of each of water soluble salts of at least, one type of element selected from a group of cobalt, nickel and zinc, and aluminum, or a mixture of these salts dispersed in water, then removing moisture after adjustment of the pH value of the aqueous solution to the range of 7.0-9.0, and drying and baking the dehydrated material. Finally, the catalytic component containing at least, rhodium and alumina is added to the monolithic catalyst with the catalytic component carrier layer. |
