The centre console has a box-like area (3a) between the seats. The side walls (5) of the box like area are reinforced and connected together by cross struts (6,7) so that a support element for the backrests (1) of the front seats is produced which acts as co-support in the event of side impact. The side walls are reinforced in the adjustment area of the backrest fittings with light metal dishes (5) which are slightly curved and have reinforcement ribs on the inward facing surfaces.
