The device has sensors which automatically detect a possible theft and produce a warning after detection. The device can contain a vibration sensor and/or an inclination sensor and/or a position sensor. The position sensor can be a Global Positioning System receiver. The device contains an evaluation unit which generates an alarm signal if a defined tolerance level is exceeded by a vibration, an inclination or a deviation of the actual position from the desired position. It has an autonomous power supply, e.g. a battery or accumulator, pref. with a charge state monitor and/or automatic charging, e.g. by solar cells.
