The invention concerns a process for preparing aerogels with hydrophobic surface groups, in which: a) a silicate-like lyogel is prepared; b) optionally, the lyogel prepared in step a) is subjected to a solvent exchange with another solvent; c) the gel obtained in step a) or b) is surface-modified with at least one C1-C6 alcohol; and d) the surface-modified gel obtained in step c) is dried subcritically.
