PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method to significantly improve the strength of a two-dimensional or three-dimensional silicon carbide fiber structure. SOLUTION: A two-dimensional or three-dimensional structure comprising fibrous activated carbon having 100-2500m<2> /g specific surface area is produced. Then the fibrous activated carbon which constitutes the structure is made to react with silicon monoxide gas at 800-2000 deg.C to obtain a two-dimensional or three-dimensional structure comprising silicon carbide fiber. After the structure is impregnated with an org. silicon compd., the structure is dried and heated at 800-2000 deg.C in vacuum of <=10<2> Pa or in a gas atmosphere which does not substantially contain oxygen. After silicon carbide is produced, the two-dimensional or three-dimensional structure comprising silicon carbide fiber is heated at 800-2000 deg.C in an atmosphere which does not substantially contain oxygen or in a gas atmosphere. Metal oxides are deposited on the fibrous activated carbon. The org. silicon compd. used is at least one kind selected from polycarbosilane, polytitanocarbosilane, and polysilane. The org. silicon compd. and a silicon carbide powder are used together. |
