PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the variable speed reproduction device possible for noiseless reproduction with high quality even in the case of non-integral number multiple reproduction in a VTR possible for variable speed reproduction. SOLUTION: A speed command for variable speed reproduction is fed to a capstan control means 18 and tape feed control and phase synchronization control in response to a command. A setting value to maximize a reproduction output of a specific field is given to a reference phase. A speed command is applied to a cylinder control means 16 and head selection and drive control of a cylinder 1 in response to the command are conducted. A chroma rotation signal J is supplied from the cylinder control means 16 as field selection information and write to a field memory 5 is inhibited for the memory control means 9 for a specific period. As a result, the video signal with a field having a small reproduction output is not received by the field memory 5 but the information received precedingly is read again and high quality noiseless reproduction is attained.
