A coupling comprising a spigot portion (10) and a socket portion (1, 3) comprising a gate valve (5) on the upstream side thereof that is open when the spigot and socket portions are coupled, and closed when they are uncoupled. The spigot portion (10) comprises an outer surface provided with a flange (14). A locking member (7) is radially movable in the socket portion and comprises a bore extending in the axial direction of the socket portion for receiving the spigot portion. The bore surface in the locking member includes two flange halves (11, 12) of which at least one consists of two substantially tapering projecting surfaces. The upstream-facing surface of the flange half (12) located upstream from the flange (14) fits at least 180~ of the flange (14) on the spigot portion in the fully coupled position.
