Esterification of mono:chloro:acetic acid with lower alcohol

The esterification of monochloroacetic acid (ClCH2.COOH) with 1-4C alcohols is carried out at 155-165 deg C with distillation off of the ester, water of reaction and only a small amount of the alcohol. The reaction is started in presence of alcohol, ClCH2.COOH and less than 1 wt.% (based on the acid) of catalyst; the addition of these components as above is continued; and the mole ratio alcohol:ClCH2COOH is varied in the range 1-1.4:1.
