A product such as a spring for supporting nuclear fuel assembly pencils is made from a strip of nickel alloy 718 by heat treatment involving solution annealing and ageing. The solution annealing is performed by either (a) maintaining the product at a temperature of 975-1010 DEG C for 15 minutes to 2 hours, (b) maintaining the product at a temperature of 1000-1060 DEG C for less than 30 minutes, or (c) maintaining the product at a temperature of 1000-1080 DEG C for less than 10 minutes. A product with a delta phase-free microstructure is achieved.
