Apparatus for separating sand and stones from sewage water comprises a pipeline section 13 housed within a container 3. The section 13 has an inlet 5 for sand containing water, and an outlet 7 for cleaned water. The base of the section 13 is formed by two portions 17, 19, joined at an angle such that the apex of the angle points downwardly. An outlet 23 is provided at the apex so that the sand may fall from the section 13 into the container 3. A baffle 27 is provided in the section 13 to direct the sand along portion 17 towards outlet 23. If portion 17 becomes blocked, water can flow over the baffle 27 to outlet 7. A further embodiment has a pivoted lower portion (117) to facilitate cleaning.
