[Also in Division C2] A method for inhibiting the growth of fungi and bacteria comprises applying to a habitat for said fungi or bacteria an effective amount of one or more of the compounds or adducts of the general formulae: in which R 1 , .R 2 and R 3 , which may be the same or different, represent hydrogen, a C 1 -C 18 aliphatic radical, an aralkyl radical, an aromatic radical, a carboxylic ester group, a carboxamido group, cyano, an amino group or an N-substituted C 1 -C 4 alkyl or phenyl derivative thereof, hydroxy or an ether thereof, mercapto or a thioether thereof, or a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic radical; or in which any two of the groups R 1 , R 2 and R 3 can complete a non-aromatic carbocyclic ring system of from 5 to 6 carbon atoms, it being further provided that the aforesaid radicals may have attached thereto at least one of nitro, C 1 -C 4 alkoxycarbonyl, thiocyano, acetamido, formyl, oxo, cyano, chloro, bromo fluoro, hydroxy group or an ether thereof phenyl, C 1 -C 4 tertiary amino, mercapto or a thioether thereof, sulphoxide, sulphone or a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic radical; X and X<SP>1</SP> represent fluorine or chlorine; n is an integer of from 1 to 6 and m is an integer from 1 to 3, with the exclusion of sym-dichlorotetrafluoroacetone and its hydrates and aliphatic alcoholates containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms in the alcohol moiety. |
