The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for cleaning viscose polymer melts possibly contaminated with paper, the impurities being segregated from the polymer melt by centrifuging. This centrifuging can be performed continuously, the centrifugal acceleration during centrifuging being more than 50 times gravitational acceleration, preferably more than 500 times gravitational acceleration and, in a particularly preferred embodiment, more than 1000 times gravitational acceleration. The cleaned polymer melt can, if appropriate, be simultaneously degassed, the gases emerging from the polymer melt during degassing being removed by suction. The apparatus for cleaning viscose polymer melts (202) possibly contaminated with paper, has a separating unit, which comprises at least the polymer-melt feeding device (20, 121), a polymer-melt discharging device (26, 127, 238) and an impurity-discharging device (4, 36, 120, 236), the separating unit having a centrifuge (1).
