Cold starting control for IC engine

The IC engine is fitted with pressure sensors to monitor the pressure variation of each cylinder through its firing cycle. By retarding the ignition timing and by varying the fuel/air mixture a rapid warm up is obtained for the catalytic converter, ie. by ensuring some unburnt fuel when the exhaust valve opens for each cylinder. The warm-up process is in two phases; an initial phase with a lean fuel mixture and a second phase with a rich fuel mixture. The initial lean fuel mixture operates up to a first temperature level and is followed by the rich mixture as soon as the catalytic converter is sufficiently warm to take advantage of unburnt fuel. This greatly reduces the emission products.
