The method involves holding bundles (3) of bristles in a fixture (2) with their ends protruding. The ends are first spread into a mushroom shape by pushing a plate against the ends. A heating plate (8) is next pushed against the ends to melt and fuse the bristles together. The emissions given off from the bundles during melting, such as vapour, gas and smoke, are sucked away through holes (6) in the heating plate and through ducts (7) and a filter (13).
