PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the camera provided with an automatic focusing means which realizes satisfactory automatic focusing and has a simple constitution and a low cost by always surely extracting an evaluation value whether the camera main body is taken in the vertical or the horizontal direction or whether an object consists of vertical lines or horizontal lines. SOLUTION: This camera is provided with a one-dimensional filter 10 which extracts a first focusing evaluation value as a signal component required for focusing from video signals outputted from image pickup means 3 and 4 and a twodimensional filter 6 which extracts a second focusing evaluation value different from the first evaluation value as another signal component required for focusing from video signals outputted from image pickup means 3 and 4. Automatic focusing means 5, 10, 12, 13, and 15 are provided which use the second focusing evaluation value together with the first focusing evaluation value to perform the focusing operation in the case that the focusing operation based on only the first focusing evaluation value extracted by the one- dimensional filter 10 is impossible. |
